8.

... 3 family, 5 friends coming to my wedding from my side.

I know it's a plane flight away, but that's pretty depressing.

Bah :( Bring cardboard cutouts? Inflatable relatives?

It's a fine idea, but I really don't want to be explaining that at customs.

This is why you will be having a mahoooosive 2nd reception party this side of the pond as soon as, yes? :D

We'll be raising a glass to you both on the day xxx

If it makes you feel any better, my wedding was only a short flight/drive away, on thanksgiving weekend and the only people who made it from my family were my dad, brother and his wife. My mom had just died, and none of the other relatives could be bothered apparently even though everyone was always at everyone elses and they were always bringing sig O's to events. My husband is the first and last sig O I brought anywhere.

heh, my dad, brother and his wife are my family representatives, too!

my mom won't fly and my big brother, best friend, etc. are too poor.

Kirsten's mom passed away a few years ago, too. It's going to be strange and a little bit sad to not have moms from either side there. Perhaps my mom will change her mind.

I had 6 family do the transatlantic trip for my wedding. No friends. Some friends did come down from Boston to DC for it, though.

ah well, at least it's not only me, then :)

A few friends from nearby in the US might make it, too, but it's going to be a hopelessly unbalanced seating arrangement.

Yeah, my ex's family is huge... thankfully we didn't have a seating arrangement to be unbalanced :)

One will be me if I can help it. I'd be coming from Tennessee, and will try and convince my girly to come for the road trip. The only thing that will stop me will be either Scott rescinding his invitation, or me not having the cash. But I have the Friday before and Monday after scheduled off from work as holiday, so I don't foresee me not coming. Nice to meet you, I'm Mark. :D

Looking forward to the same myself. Even though I have a few friends in the States, I doubt many of them will be willing/capable of heading to Kentucky for it. We'll probably be trying for a second reception here in NZ afterwards, but god knows when we'll be able to afford that.

Sometimes it does suck to be a poor little guitar teacher. Oh well. Hope your mum changes her mind, that would be good. Not sure what I can say, other than this: my cousin Ili (her name is Iliada, her sister is Odisea..) got married (to the same guy, that is) twice, once on each side of the Atlantic, so that both families could be there. She pestered me to play at the second wedding, in Venezuela, earlier this month, as it was 'a once in a lifetime...' er, wait, I played at your wedding once already two years ago, I said... anyways, you could perhaps do something of the sort so that we all, on both sides, feel that we were able to be at your wedding.

That, or I'll buy you a drink or three :P

This is why my better half and I are planning a "wedding tour" when we're financially well-set. At least 2 receptions, in the US and Ireland, then honeymoon/potential 3rd bash in Germany for the mainland.

In other words, once we become millionaires, we can get married. Makes it much easier to push back the date. ;)

Which is not to say either of those is an acceptable excuse, I just suck cock (for the right price).

When the monkey and I got married, we had the wedding and a reception here in Oakland, for our West Coast friends and my family and a tiny (tiny!) subset of his megafamily, then his mom had a reception for us back in New York so the rest of the family could meet the bizarre Californian who'd just married in.

Think of it as an excuse for another party. Not that you need an excuse, but still...

well... you didn't actually invite me :P
(though I have no money at all, and couldn't go anyway.)

You should hold a second symbollic one here - then we all get to see you all dressed up, and we'd all buy you gifts

go on, you know you want to.

I got married in Scotland. She was Czech and I'm Canadian. None of her family came, and a few Glaswegian cousins came on side. Other than that, it was just a handful of friends. It was a fucking great day, though. We all went on a carousel under Edinburgh Castle afterwards. It'll be a good day. It's not about who's there, it's about you two looking into each other's eyes. Try not to be too saddened.

I've already gone to one overseas wedding this year, I just can't afford two.

It's not really surprising, I know you feel abandoned right now but as someone who does put in the effort to cross boarders to attend weddings that's about the number of imports who've been at every international wedding I've been to.

Sorry bubs, hope the day is wonderful.

Technically, I had 2 people from my side. My mum and my little sis. I'm just glad that everyone sat wherever they wanted to instead of doing the separate seating based on if they were there for the groom or the bride. Otherwise, I would have been pretty damn depressed/embarrassed.

But don't let it get to you. Your day will be so gloriously awesome that hopefully someone will remind you to pause and let it all sink in before it goes by in a blur.

We had a pretty small number of the people I invited make it to our wedding - it's worth keeping in mind how much it costs to fly over. A few people made noises like they really hoped they could make it, and just couldn't in the end. OTOH, some of those people found a way - it takes a while to plan a sudden holiday.

We also did the party back home thing, but because we're in the middle of Wales, only a couple of people who didn't live in Aber turned up to that one, too!

EDIT: Also, both were awesome, regardless.

Sadly, I shall be engaged in a very hush-hush trip to Nicaragua to bring back the men Uncle Sam left behind. Highly unlikely I'll be there but watch for a slightly-overweight SAS guy with a raggedy beard abseiling through the window of your reception...

Just in case! ;)
