Oh, for fuck's sake!
Apr. 15th, 2003 03:47 pmBack from Whitby safe and sound... full (well, pieced-together) entry about that later...
Annoyingly, I got back from Whitby to my empty house (Liz is visiting family, Lyssa isn't back yet) and to find my computer had crashed... no biggy... so I reset it and went to get a drink... it wasn't back up when I returned.
It seems that against all probability, my PC's chip fan had fell off.
Onto the graphics card.
So... my newly-bought (to finish the album with) 2 gig chip has overheated, burned and is dead as a doormouse...
Fortunately, Jason had a spare chip kicking around that my machine will take... I installed it only to discover:
My long-serving and very-last-gen-but-worked-fine Riva TNT 2 (that I got free, too, so it's totally done the business) is now dead also.
Fortunately, I am a hoarder and had a fucking ancient Matrox Mystique (upgraded to the hilt) in a spare drawer. Apart from being pathetic by today's 3D standards, it's got a nod in the direction of graphics acceleration and it'll run 1280x1024, so at least I don't feel like I'm working on a fucking CPC464 (which, co-incidentally, was what the graphics out of my Riva looked like on reboot - fault-tastic).
Apart from being fucking annoying and expensive when I could do without it (Whitby costs money and all...), I had the crashing realisation that when left on it's own for a weekend...
... my PC got so lonely it tried to commit suicide
Fuck's sake... I am the king of angst.
