Gott und himmel
Jun. 25th, 2003 10:11 pmI'm making backing tracks and I'm fucking SICK to the back TEETH of it.
As some of you may know, we've pondered backing tracks since day one... taking a wholly studio project live has been something of a motherfucking labour of love.
Way-back-when (alright, last year), we decided, NO, we would NOT use a backing track.
I've gabbled on to countless people about my pride that we don't.
*Because* we didn't choose them, we've had no safety-net and no excuse, and have been forced to become better at our respective jobs than we would have needed to be otherwise. This, I feel, is a Good Thing(tm).
However, needs must when the devil nicks your trousers.
Just before Hexa left, we re-opened the can of worms and decided to *try* a backing track and see how it went, in a minimal stylee, and because, apart from other issues, it means we don't have to take a fucking sampler on stage with us just to play crawlout and demons (for vocal effects and a few particularly fucked-up drums).
Since Hexa bid us adieu, we realised that at least for the short term, we now very much need to go down that route as there's bits of every song that just plain need to be in there, that we can't do with 1xVocals + 1xGuitar + 1xBass + 1xDrummer.
We'd explored having a sampler and frankly it sucked cock.
Big, unwieldy bastards, you have to pump them full of disks before a set, and Phil has to grow *yet another arm* to trigger the damn thing via his V-Drums.
So, anyway, we're using minimal backtracks for the next couple of gigs at least, to see how they work. Just synths, a few filter-beats in breakdowns, and effect shots.
However, A) I'm not looking forward to it and B) It is the single least rewarding, TEDIOUS job in the world stripping down and retiming tracks, then synching them with a click-track.
I'm sure that at the end of the day, this move will bridge the gap between the album sound and the live sound, but at the moment, I'm fucking HATING it and am very tempted to pull a 'Jason' and trash the fucking laptop in Leicester so we can't use it again.
heh.
Yeah.
Time for ME to earn a few rock'n'roll points.
Muaha.
