Well, couple of... up and down gigs.
Played in Winchester, enjoyed it, and the new clean-ups to the live sound we've made seemed to sing through. Unfortunately, there was an overrun, so we played a shorter set, but it was a good atmosphere and I hope people felt they got a good show.
Today's gig was really gut-wrenching. We got to soundcheck for, quite literally, two minutes, ten minutes before the doors opened.
What then occurred was a combination of the worst luck I/we have had in ages as jason's guitar cut in and out, the backing track did likewise and at one point, the mp3 player froze.
We hung in there and gave it as much welly as we could muster, but I feel shocking for us putting out such a poor show in such a wonderful venue.
From our perspective, it was a horrific ordeal. The monitor mix changed wildly as the set progressed and half of the time I couldn't tell what I was meant to sing to. The huge, powerful PA made for enormous echos and weirdness when the monitors were acting up.
I don't think it was the sound men's faults as much as that they were trying to adjust the mix (monitors and front of house) as we went because we'd none of us had time to balance it in 'sound check', and the mp3 player was just a kick in the tits from the gods.
Needless to say, I feel wretched about the whole affair and came home as I didn't really feel like showing my face all night to an audience that had just heard us sound rotten.
Double irony, I was (apart from drinking half a can while actually on stage) stone cold sober, but the technical hitches and the abject terror I felt from sounding so pants to the crowd meant I looked and sounded like boiled shite.
I'd forgotten the days of numerous technical hitches because over time, we've *fixed* everything that could be our problem and taken precautions against those things we can't control. Apart from that, we played using the exact same god damn kit the previous night, so nothing should have been any different.
If you were at the gig, thanks for bearing with us, and I'm so sorry, we just did our level best to make it work, I hope it wasn't as bad out front as it seemed on stage.
I am now going to cheer myself up by reading comics and eating lots of soup.
Christ, I'm a right moaner at the moment.
