Former Home Secretary David Blunkett is recovering after being injured by a charging cow in Derbyshire.

Holy shit, it's happening! I have special powers! I must concentrate!

Exactly like the 1st time (10 years ago, at a chop-shop in Leamington Spa) I tried to get this tattoo done, the answer was that it was impossible to draw it that small (I had the aliens about 1cm high each - a little over 2cm for the band) and that I would need to have it twice the size (about 4cm high) and that it would cost ~$350

Fuck that noise!

(Actually, last time, when the chap told me you simply couldn't achieve fine detail, I showed him the 2-point dragons on my left arm, he said "fucking hell, how did you get that done?" ... and I left the shop. If you don't know how to set up a gun with less than 5 needles - which I'm not even convinced is required - then I don't need your time... cheeeeers!)

I think the artist just didn't fancy the tedium and was maybe being lazy because the piece is nothing like your usual flash art job and involved some precision and repetition. The woman on the desk seemed a little incredulous that I wanted it, and instead of sitting with me and talking about how it could be achieved, they just said "you'll need to make it THIS BIG to work".

If they'd said "we can definitely do this, but it will cost you" that's fine. But "it'll be costly AND you won't get it how you want"... that doesn't work for me.

One way you could approach it would be to do it as raster lines, like the old school systems. It could start off looking a bit like this:

... and over time, the lines would blur and fill in as the skin grew, and that would be fine.

Just to re-assure myself I wasn't going insane, I picked up a ballpoint pen and doodled a few attempts myself. Given that I'm not an artist, this was freehand (not tracing a stencil) and with a fat ball pen, instead of a needle, I think it might be achievable.

[edit]: I was able to draw it this size upside down in 20 seconds on my own arm, so come on, kids:

Yes, I'm hairy.

I'm sure the folks at Splash of Colour do good work when it's the sort of material they see every day (we went there on the basis of Kirsten having seen many sweet tattoos friends had got done there), but they didn't seem much bothered about doing something interesting (at least, not to my spec).

Try another company, I guess!
