This evening, while waiting for a bath to fill, I unlocked my Treo 600.
I had to hotsync (well, always a good idea before you update firmware) then do a full (wipe the whole unit) reset, but after that, the updater ran, I popped in a new SIM and yup, it's unlocked.
Although it seems dirty to put a Virgin SIM in an Orange phone.
Nice to know I can now take the phone to another company if I like, but moreso, that I can pop in any other SIM in the case of an emergency (like no service on one provider and you're stuck in the middle of nowhere, etc, etc).
OK, I mostly did it because I'm a geek and I get a thrill out of knowing I could have ruined my handset on a whim but didn't.
Go me!
