Woohar... after a week of thinking that the guy I talked to at Orange was probably blowing smoke up my arse, I just got a text telling me the Treo 650 is in stock.

Called up the upgrade line, opened the conversation with "hello, I was going to leave orange, but you gave me a good quote, so I hear you have the handsets now, I want to take you up on it..."

... and what do you know, they had indeed logged the quote, and I am now about to get:

* 750 anytime / any network minutes for 35 quid a month
* Treo 650 for 39.99 quid

plus my old (not ace, but ok) options of:

* 5 quid insurance
* 4 quid for 5mb GPRS (which is the only weak part of the deal, frankly)

... result!

So, the moral of the story seems to be to have all the facts about how you could move off your provider to another and save money, and start the whole deal by saying you want to leave, not upgrade

Fucking ace. I'll be saving about 50 quid a month (due to not running over my talktime allowance) and I get a spanky phone for $not_much_cash.

VICTORY!

The only provider that doesn't work with is O2. I told them I was leaving unless they gave me the phone/network minutes I wanted and the phone monkey basically said 'OK'.

well, all the better reason for you to move, I guess.

That is Very Useful News. My contract runs out shortly, & I *really* want to upgrade my Treo600 to a 650, but have been put off by the high cost.

I shall try them when I get back from Glastonbury.

To be quite honest, I didn't actually press to get the cost of that reduced, as I figured I was onto a Good Thing.

In retrospect, they would hardly have retracted the existing deal, I should have said "look, if I move to three, I'll save enough money to buy a Treo 650 and have cash left over - how about that handset is FREE, huh?"

Worth a try... ;)

Yeah, if someone said "I was giving you £1000 a year but this guy says I can give him £950 a year instead" you'd probably say "Well wait just one moment, you can give me £940 a year if you prefer."

Whereas if someone said "I've given you £1000 over the past year, so I want to give you £1000 this next year too" you'd probably say "OK, thanks"

hum.

my o2 upgrade is up in a few weeks. and orange might get my business instead...3G with full net access (rather than Three's fucking captive portal) and a nokia 6680 (symbian-based) for thirty quid a month and eighty quid one-off, which from the sounds of things can be knocked down at their discretion.

nice.

and a gig of free transfer (aka the most useful thing ever) and free video calling (aka the most useless thing ever) for three months. blimey.

Completely true.

My four years working for o2 taught me that. Amazing the deals you can get if you make it clear you know exactly what you want...

I'm going to have to remember that shit, the Treo 650 costs $500 through the cell phone company, and if I get one my gf is going to want one too, so $1000 for the dream phone. Defenitly going to have to remember the whole bargaining thing.

You lucky fuck.

Emboldened by your actions, I rang 'em and am getting when I get paidddd the new 650 for £50 and I'm reducing my minutes to 60 - which is something I've wanted to do for ages, as I don't talk on the phone TONS and mainly use it for texting, interweb, email and contacting my mum, and I put it off thinking (rightly, as a general rule) they'd charge me the earth for an upgrade if I did.

Does it just pick up all the backed up info from the 600 on the computer from the last HotSync?

The install software for the 650 defaulted to "upgrade from existing 600 phone", which, yup, picked up all the old settings, applications and data.
