verizon, dollars and cents

22 minutes of abject stupidity. [via squiggle]
The full transcript is marginally less harrowing than the audio.
Verizon seems to employ call handlers that have worked with money values so much, they've forgotten basic maths terminology.
Having quoted a guy a per-Kilobyte cost rate for his mobile phone of "zero point zero zero two cents" and confirmed it (both at the time, and numerous times in this recorded call), a hapless customer patiently attempts to get the reps to realise that 0.002c != $0.002.
The confusion has stemmed from the incorrect way of verbally reading out a price:
ie, $5.002 = "five dollars and point zero zero two cents".
No, it isn't. It's "five dollars and point two cents"
So, $0.002 = "point 2 cents" or "point zero zero two dollars"
But "point zero zero two cents" = $0.002
The guy tries to explain this in a variety of different ways to three different reps, who all not only refuse to concede that the two concepts are different, but continue to restate the price in the incorrect format.
Not one to listen to if you get frustrated easily. I kind of want to knock myself out with an iron bar now.
