Just stumbled across Microphones and Microphone Technique by Pete Davies while talking to samoth about mics / vocals.

This is a good deal of common sense stuff, but if you want a Beginner's Guide to some of the overlooked basics of mics for gigs, it's a decent (and relatively light) read. :)

I'm so glad you pointed us to that article. I was thinking of buying a new mic rather than my radio mic that never gets used because venues hate it!

SM58s, babaeh!

What kind of radio mic do you have / aren't using? I'm actually considering a Madonna mic :P But concerned that apart from practicalities like VHF interference, it will make me look a tool.

Well, I have a seinhauser radio mic but most venues hate it and I never get to use it! One that I can hook up to any lead is the kind of thing I have been after!

the Shure SM58 is VERY popular (and known for taking a lot of punishment), but as that article mentions, it's got a really bullish bottom end, particularly if you get in close... but that's more of a problem with male singers, I guess. Is your Sennheiser a madonna-mic type one, or a hand-held?

The other thing I've seen to recommend the SM58 a lot is kinda 'it works ok no matter how shit the PA is' - there are many better mics, but they require a decent desk/competent engineer etc, whereas the SM58 is good and solid and well known and fairly flattering for most singers. At least that's my limited understanding...
