THIS IS A UNIX SYSTEM I KNOW THIS

I am going to watch:

Hackers
Jurassic Park
Johnny Mnemonic
Sneakers
Wargames
Lawnmower Man

My theme is "Films featuring awful depictions of cyberspace"

I need more films.

I'm not sure about Tron, as it's pretty fucking awesome.

The Net.

[identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
good point, but I sorta class that movie as "so bad it actually is bad", rather than hackers and the like which are so awful they're somehow good again... but I did have it on a mental B-list.

does whatserface get her tits out in it?

I actually thought Hackers did a pretty good job. Theatrical but fairly sound techniques. At least they weren't hacking coffee pots plugged into power outlets.

are you kidding? The filesystem in that movie was a fly-through GUI that looked like skyscrapers! (Disclaimer: I love Hackers. But it is much more geek fantasy than anything realistic.)

Sneakers is brilliant!

[identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
it is, I don't even remember any really awful cyberspace metaphors (though the stuff with the blind guy was farcical - if funny - sometimes)

I mostly added it because it's got hacking in it, and I actually enjoy it :D

[identity profile] moopet.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Oh! Arcade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_%28film%29)!
It's got Megan Ward in it in some kind of skintight cyber suit (I'm deliberately not looking up how old she was at the time) and my desktop what I'm typing this on is named Arcade in its honour, that's how glorious it is. Virtual Reality was all going to be about Knightmare, you see...

[identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
holy shit, I've seen that... it was exquisitely bad... I wonder if torrents exist!

[identity profile] ed-dirt.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
i immediately thought of Tron, but then I thought, "No, actually that was pretty cool". And then I saw your mention of it.

The Matrix was sort of supposed to be cyberspace. Sort of.
Strange days is a "sort of" as well ( and worth watching for Angela Bassett).

yip, though probably not the 1st one, which is not *too* awful. need true awfulness.

Dude, the worst of the worst is Burning Chrome, originally a short story by William Gibson and starring Christopher Walken. You'd think with those two things it would be filled with awesomesauce, but it's all just a clever trick. It's fucking horrible :)

[identity profile] the-buzzard.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually I think all the technobabble in Die Hard 4 works because whenever it comes up John McClane rolls his eyes along with the audience.

Also Jurassic Park and Wargames are both legitimately good movies!

Hackers is pretty solid (I mean, you have to show command line terminal as interesting... what do you do?).

Tron is REALLY solid actually, at least things make sense to their counterparts in real life.

Jurassic Park was a real SGI interface, so they were actually using software on that machine. Not fake.

Sneakers was sound on most stuff - but the building break-in was toss. Odd tip - I now live NEXT DOOR to the building they use as their HQ in that movie. It's the Fox Oakland Theatre, and it was abandoned and empty when they filmed there.

[identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hackers is pish, and I fucking hate it, it's going to be awesome to watch :D

also, Takedown.

Tron is the daddy. Nuff said.

Jurassic park might have used real software, but the kids and their reactions etc were fucking intolerable.

Sneakers was lovely and full of awesome... that's wicked, man :)

it isn't really 'cyberspace', and it's hardly the whole movie, but Office Space features a Mac shutting down to a C prompt.

If you include Lawnmower Man then the sequel needs to be added as it's 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000 x worse.
