Hmmm, nagging me every day to upgrade to the new AVG 9.0?

What a great reminder!*

... to replace AVG with Avast.

* That, and your convenient tendency to believe that cracks and patches no other AV thinks are viruses are lethal threats. Ta-ta, you fucking nuisance.

I just replaced it with the free AVG 9 when the nag came up. Only to find that it switched me out of any full-screen app every half an hour or so until I disabled its "game mode".

So, Avast you say? :-)

Avast is ace - very non-intrusive and very effective. And free for home use.

AVG sounds like a friggin' nightmare.

Using Avira at the moment. Seems fairly good. And a smaller memory footprint than AVG.

MSE is pretty good, too. Very small footprint, generally uninvasive.

Yeah, that was a shame really. I've been using AVG on my workstation and my mum's workstation for yeaaarrrrs. They really seem to have shot themselves in the foot with the spamming.

I still recommend it to the sort of person who *needs* nagging to stay up to date, but I prefer software that at least has a mode for "I know what I'm doing, fuck off and leave me to it".

Avast is, quite literally, the tits.

Disable the sounds on Avast! though because otherwise an annoying American voice says "Antivirus updated" all the time.

I have been woken in the middle of the night by a four minute warning klaxon courtesy of Avast. Whilst I appreciate knowing that something dodgy had arrived I decided that I could live with finding this out in the morning and couldn`t find the turn off sound button fast enough.
