VNC under Vista

Anyone got a good VNC server that runs fine under Vista? I normally use either RealVNC or TightVNC, but have had no joy with either.

Pain in the arse, frankly.

(yes, yes, obligatory "Vista is shit" arguments acknowledged and agreed with, but not helpful)

just tried it. I'm beginning to suspect there is something worse at work, because not only can it not be reached now, but uvnc can't make outbound connections either.

and I don't run any firewall software (we're behind decent hardware), so this is most odd.

My other boxen all talk to each other - a mixture of XP and a Mac, and it's all on the same network, within the same subnet, etc.

It's bladdy frustrating. I'm assuming some sort of comedy Vista fuckup, but other folks are saying they're doing fine with it.

hmmmmmmm.

flummoxed!

just installed it, now it can't even manage outbound connections!

Something Ain't Right on that box, obviously!

I've had WinVNC running on Vista just fine. What's the issue you be having? Firewall maybe?

Failing that - try UltraVNC.

Is all within the same network, and my machines don't run firewalls at home (this one in particular shouldn't be running one at all, and doesn't appear to be).

bloody annoying.

Odd, I used RealVnc as my server for a couple years under Vista, no real issues. What are you running up against?

[identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
previously, it would happily make outbound connections to my other boxes, but attempts to connect to it would have the connection shut immediately (which I admit sounds like a firewall shutting it down).

having put on uvnc, I now can't even make outbound connections (and inbound are still refused)

netstat and wireshark are your friend in troubleshooting freaky network issues.

Sysinternals is also excellent for tracking down odd process behaviour.

YourMUMVnc.

Hurrr.

As a workaround does RDP work? Or is not allowing desktop viewing at all?

Since no one else will...

[Obligatory unhelpful "Vista is shit" argument.]

I don't really get the depth of the hate on Vista. Ok, I only went to it after SP1 in order to avoid early issues, but the worst I could say about it is that it didn't look like much of an upgrade for several years work.

I'm actually a-ok with it, it just needs a few things switching off, then it behaves fine.

Everyone's much adored Win-7 is the same fucking OS with a few switches flipped.

I was just anticipating the wave of Vista-anguish.
