I wonder if kids abhor the quiet and adults fare much better in it because by the time you've got old, your head's full of noises?
Mine is, anyway, I have a powerful MIND JUKEBOX playing rave incessantly (that I meant to put on the mp3 player and never did, so have been "hearing" all day, obviously), the sound someone's voice internally reading aloud the book I'm engrossed in, various weird characters running around, fighting, fucking, blowing things up and making noises of their own in the periphery of my consciousness (it's a bit like a constant Tom and Jerry cartoon at the edges of my mind, it seems), plus a healthy dash of tinnitus. So, it's pretty noisy in here at any time of day.
But, I remember hating silence / quietness as a kid, and Corben gets very restless if I just sit about with only my internal cacophony for company.
Of course, I may be dangerously insane. I do get the whole audio-hallucinations-before-I-sleep thing.
