Corben understands a phrase that is entirely wonderful...

Since (quite a long time ago, now) he figured out how to turn his electronic toys on (or back on after they've been deliberately silenced), he now understands:

"Could you turn that off, please?"

- Some of the toys are absolutely incessant with the noise they make. Hell, I bought him a cocking drumkit and I prefer that. These things even call out to the child if they're left alone (but still turned on)... it scared the shit out of me the first time I heard a maniacal "COME BACK AND PLAY WITH ME!" spurt from a discarded toy.

Needless to say, I took it out the back and shot it quite dead, but the next day, the toy was back, unharmed, and pleading to be played with. I have long since given up working out which part(s) of the exchange happened in my mind, which is now thoroughly addled with things from In the Night Garden (Corben's obsessed with it) and my own immersion in Fallout 3.

Yesterday, Liz asked me if it was possible to disconnect just the speaker from a toy, and I explained that it was eminently doable (open, locate speaker, cut wire) - this morning, I found a slightly confused Corben playing with a delightfully silent fire engine that used to sing a crazed song in Chinese on a constant short loop, so she obviously got technical on its ass :)

But yeah, I often talk to Corben quite normally (I believe you're supposed to) and increasingly, he's responding correctly to what I said ("could you pick that up?", "would you pass me that?", "turn the light off, please", etc.) - it was quite wonderful when I learnt that he will happily switch his toys back off on request :)

Still working on "make the tea", mind you, but he did open the inner porch door to some bloody mormons while I was only dressed in my boxers. I'm pretty sure I didn't instruct him to do that.
