The US and Russian presidents have called on Iran and North Korea to stop their suspected nuclear weapons programmes.

I assume that's just good, wholesome 'do as I say, not as I do', fatherly behaviour. Not, you know, utter hypocrisy.

Damn me for a peace-lovin', CND-ring wearin' hippy, but I think maybe we should ALL fuck the nukes off.

Last year the respective leaders of Russia and America agreed to cut back there nuclear weapons programs... slightly...

So now George Bush only was enough nuclear fire power to destroy the earth about 400 times over instead of 600.

There's a comfort...

What ever happened to sixteen overkill?

At least Putin has *some* idea of diplomacy, and is using this as a suggestion as opposed to an ultimatium that "We have these Nukiller toys and you can't play"

Not to say that I approve of strongarm tactics in the slightest. However, I know that as a leader of a nation I'd rather be asked than told. Besides, the treaties both nations have with the Ayotollah, sanctioned for peace would, in event of the recent events in Iraq, be considered as "debatable", given the lax attitude to the UN, moreso with Dubya's "Lets's bomb the fuckers anyway" attitude.

I fear for the future...

Or I may just be a wanker who's read too much transmet, and doesn't hope to live past 25.

the scary thing was the US talking about developing nuclear bunker busters - low yeild (kilotonne) nukes that are 'no longer self deterring' - ie. not Too terrible to use.

Hmm...the "it's only a little nuke, so no harm done" theory. Scary!

Well it's either that, or heavy duty thermobaric weapons to take the bunkers out...

but Project Ploughshare in the 50's (aka Project "What can we do with Nukes? Dig big Holes!") showed they're great at making big craters and blowing loads of radioactive earth into the sky, not so good at making deep narrow holes to get at bunkers.
So unless they have some major 'shaped nuclear charge' Science TM ready (and it'll need all sorts of tests before it's ready to use) low yeild nukes are really only good at blowing small places you don't like up.

Granted. Shaped Nuclear Charge? I wonder how they'd go about doing that?

you could stick a bunch of focusing rods at the tip of a heavy X Ray bomb with a stand off fuse - nuke goes off just above the ground, producing blast and a massive burst of coherent X rays down into the bunker...

I am very worried about this, I have loads of freinds in Iran and Iranian friends over here. They are good people who take looking after one another very seriously. If anything happens they will be the victims not the regime. :(

odd that they're calling for them to stop stuff they've no real proof of and comply to the IAEA guidelines and inspections
but the US hasn't turned over it's evidence of the Iraqi nuclear program to the IAEA as they're treaty bound to do...
