Nicked from [livejournal.com profile] sciamachy: the Vegetarian Passport

... a web page with, in most prevalent languages of the world, a description of what a vegetarian (also, same for vegan) is.

So, if you go somewhere and are having problems communicating with the locals that you don't dig on swine, you can (at worst) hand them a printed copy of the relevant page.

I can't imagine how much shit this would have saved me in the past, buying chinese food in spain, explaining via mime that where I come from, a ten pound steak is, in fact, considered meat :)

I find it's bad enough in this country, which amazes me.
Why *Do* Italian restaraunts still think that fish is vegetarian?
Also,it's so difficult to tell if things like ice cream or cheese have rennet or gelatine in, or have been cooked in/on the same place as meat.

Its mostly because of language differences. Carne == Meat. Carne is also a particular section of the menu. So if you don't eat meat, then the other parts of the menu (which include fish and chicken) must be fair game (excuse the pun)

I guess it also isn't helped by Pescetarians (those who eat fish, but not other types of meat) using the term Vegetarian interchangably.

Me: I'm Vegetarian
$PERSON: Do you eat Fish?
Me: No, I'm Vegetarian
$PERSON: But some Vegetarians eat fish
Me: No Vegetarians eat fish
$PERSON: But they do.
Me: No, they're just people who don't know what Vegetarians are

I've had this conversation so many times ...

People need labels, so informing them that someone who only eats fish and no other type of meat is actually a pescatarian and not a vegetarian can help.

Ditto on having that conversation many, many times.

"because of my beliefs I don't eat anything obtained from a killed animal"

So if I found a dead sheep behind the barn, it'd be ok to feed that to someone presenting me with this document?
