It ought to be abundantly clear that that was the sound of me losing my fucking temper.

I'm actually kind of full of the milk of human kindness, as my inbox isn't brimming with the expected (and to a degree, deserved) hatemail, but mostly my friends and a few strangers talking intelligently and vibrantly (despite my continual attempts to derail the conversation into an advert for Canada or Sweden)... and most reassuringly.

Maybe there's hope after all.

Of course, elsewhere, I've been informed that "What Kerry did in Vietnam was treasonous" and told that because he hasn't been part of many particularly startling pieces of legistlature, he is, I believe the argument ran, worse than Bush. All hail the power of the media.

Let's get one thing straight: I do not adore Kerry (by a long chalk), but if and when (oh, let it be so) he is elected, he removed his trousers, sat back in that plush chair and announced that his only policy for his term would be to scratch his balls, the US and the world at large would benefit, comparatively, from what would become referred to in time as the Kerry Reign of Peace and Tranquility.

If you cannot see, clearly, that the man is the lesser of two evils, and that his greatest evil, when compared to Bush, is that he has a face that resembles a slightly sad almond, then I truly do not know how to convince you.

But I will continue to try.

Anyway, normal service will be resumed.

Those wanting to knock my lights out may form an orderly queue, but I suggest bringing sandwiches and a newspaper to read.

I know it's childish, but I just have an image of you hiding on a building site, stealing people's shovels with an evil grin on your face.

I'm optimistically hoping that it means my friends list understand my point of view, but it could also mean that with months of continual swearing and verbal aggression, they simply didn't notice and expected there to be a link to a track at the end...

One important thing to remember about US culture is that while they speak English, more Americans have German ancestry than any other.
& they haven't had the stuffing knocked out of them in two World Wars to remind them that Blind Obedience to the Leader and being led by Eine Starke Fuhrer are not neccessarily good things.

In your other post you said it was question time. I'm disappointed...where's the question?

Unless that was question in terms of the American lifestyle, in which case I couldn't agree with you more. I'm still rooting for Canada.

"What Kerry did in Vietnam was treasonous"

Was that actually THEIR phrasing? Because what Kerry did in Vietnam was... you know... shoot people his government told him to and protect American soldiers from harm. Are they that far-left, or that poor at constructing their arguments?

Anyways. If Kerry were to lose the election on Tuesday and get his by a truck on Wednesday, he would still be pretty well remembered by history for a few things--first and foremost, being the only Senator to do anything about Iran-Contra. You know, that thing about how the President's dad was selling weapons to Iran (the other member of the Axis of Evil we armed?) and giving the money to death squads...

Fuck normal service, man. This is the fun shit.

From: [identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com

That was very close the phrasing, IIRC. At most, they said "practically treasonous".

To which my response was fairly explosive.

The thing is that they believed it. I was angry for them being so uninformed and not having thought about it, but they were simply an example of the muchly-lied-to masses.

The thing is that if you *thought* someone had betrayed your country, you wouldn't want them in office, sure, but we KNOW Bush has.

I find it hard to believe the level to which the misinformation has become many people's truth.

Makes me scream and shout.

For us, it'd be the far-right (or even the regular right, at this point) saying such things. But then, I think the British and the Americans say things oppisite of each other (Kerry IS left for us..)

I'm sure that the above pair of sentences have plenty of innaccuracies, but that was my understanding.

BTW, nothing about Iran Contra has gotten major media play here. Wonder why.

You have it the same way round, it's just that by every other Western democracies standards mainstream Republicans are crazy far-right and Democrats are moderate right.

Or, to put it another way, the entire political discourse of the US is way right wing.

The UK is to the right of pretty much everywhere else in Europe, but still substantially left of the USA.

Oh, that was it. I think I have difficulty remembering, just because it boggles the mind to think of something more left then the "Pinko commie scum" that is the more left leaning end of the Democratic party.

Not knowing where you're from... but the Iran Contra hasn't gotten any play in the states. I have no fucking clue why he hasn't made that a campaign issue--after all, considering that Bush's dad and members of his staff were complicit in arming one of the members of the Axis of Dumb weapons, you'd think that might be a viable campaign tactic.

Yes well, much as he is the better of options, Kerry is by no means the best option. It almost seems as if bloggers know more about politics than the only candidates with a snowball's chance.

No, you're absolutely right.

I REALLY don't think he's the best thing since sliced bread, but I cannot, through all consideration, see how he could fuck up the country and the world worse than Bush. I mean, he'd have to get up before he went to sleep.

Kerry is a jackass, but only a regular-scale jackass. Bush is weapons-grade scum.

Obviously, all of this is intended as my opinion - I don't think I'm an expert, but I've spend enough time reading up on issues desperately *hoping* for credible evidence that the Bush regime isn't as bent as I believe it to be. And... well, no dice.

When it comes to the lesser of two evils thing, I am reminded of how our so-called wonderful system is so flawed. Third party candidates don't stand a chance because they don't receive the funding. McCain is infinitely better than both candidates combined.

My opinion on Kerry is similar to yours; he's the kind of guy that, while Bush is busy wreaking havoc, is lurking always out of the corner of your eye, a black speck always eluding being pinpointed, like the start of a migraine. Still, although migraines suck, it is wholly preferable to Bush raping the world.

It's like choosing between a Giant Douche and a Turd Sandwich. (South Park is <3)

McCain, honestly, is an awesome choice. Both sides have tried to get him in with them, not much going there. If he runs in 08, he'll take it in a landslide. I'm pretty sure the same could be said for Colin Powell, or perhaps Gulliani as well (although most of what he's done has been 9/11 related, which s hows a bit where our mentality is, if you didn't know already)

The only plus side of Bush getting elected is that in 4 years his butt would get whooped by McCain and finally our country would be righted. The main question then would be whether or not we would survive that long.

If Kerry gets elected, I'm not so sure. We'd just have to wait and see how good a job he does whilst scratching his balls, as was so eloquently written.

Honestly, I wish there was a snowball's chance in hell for anyone. Nader isn't that superb either, but he's far and away better than Kerry OR Bush. And maybe I'm abusing the system by not voting my conscience, but honestly, I don't think my conscience could be comfortable with Bush getting office because other people voted third party when they would have otherwise voted Kerry. It's rather sad this is the way of things. Does it happen this way on the other side of the pond as well?
