You are an easily repelled teenager
The mosquito device was made for the likes of you. You are probably begging to make the noise stop!

The highest pitched ultrasonic mosquito ringtone that I can hear is 18.8kHz

Quite apart from the fact that I'm 28, I was also up 'till 4am writing loud industrial music on headphones!

I cannot be destroyed!

:D

I was also listening on good headphones, which potentially might influence things - on my laptop earlier, I could only hear 17k, which leads me to believe it was the laptop's speakers that were to blame no my ears.

That happens to me with quite a few devices, but I'd be suprised if lappy speakers could reproduce >20khz tones. many sets of cheaper headphones only go up to ~18khz because most people just don't notice the difference.

My headphones are rated to 22 as far as I'm aware, and I can hear it, as can my mate Chris and hes 31. Considering the abuse he puts his ears through, this suprises me.

Makes me wonder as to the sutes legitimacy.

several of the purported ultrasonic mp3 files around aren't. there's a wav file of 17k which actually *is* 17k, but i agree, most speakers probably won't reproduce it. we tested it in Richard's studio, which has decent, if puny, speakers.

I can hear the 21.1kHz one on cheapo'tastic pc speakers.

Not bad for someone about to hit the 30 mark in a few days...

our experimentation with our ultrasonic deterrent device (£16 on ebay!) indicates that i can hear up to about 19, too. not bad at all. Richard can't hear anything above about 14. the pure 17 sine wave i find *horrific* but he can't hear at all.

on the other hand, we recently had a screaming argument about whether of not a subwoofer worked. i held it up to me ear and went "I HEAR NOTHING!!!", he insisted it was working. i think we resolved it the same was as the ultrasounds - looking at a display on the mixer or the mac. i did have to concede i could feel some air movement near it. i do test as having no low-end hearing.

Ha, I out-ear you!

You aren't even a teenager yet!
Your hearing rules! You're either quite young or you've looked after my ears.

The highest pitched ultrasonic mosquito ringtone that I can hear is 19.9kHz

Here's a nice contrast for you. I'm 39.

I hear nothing over 10kHz in my right ear and nothing over 14.9kHz in my left.

Does that have anything to do with the howling of those three children you seem to have growing out of your right shoulder?

That's what happens to your ears after years of loud music in headphones...and years of playing bass at stage right.

I can hear the 21.1 just like Arkady although it made my eyeballs hurt. I tried it on a few diffent types of speaker from headphones through to a medium fostex. I also hear electronics. There was a monitor on the ground floor whistling that only I could hear which drove me mad whilst I hunted it down. The employee was quite surprised when I walked up and yanked the power out of the back. They now have a shiney flat panel.

oh and as a point to note that is only in my right ear. My left can just make out the 19 and the 18 clearly.

My eyeballs started to feel a bit tight around the 19.9 level. Glad I can still hear the 17.7 (and only barely the 18.8) at age 28, though - especially since my dad's side of the family has a tendency towards early deafness.

My speakers are utter shite, but.

ah, yes. i regularly track down noisy monitors 2+ floors away in our house and complain about them. and i keep trying to explain to Richard that the Tv goes "eeeeeeeeeeeeee", and therefore i can't watch it if i have a migraine.

yus, the TV goes "eeeeee" for me, too, but on a level that I can ignore :)

I got 15.8kHz, but I think all the earplugless grinding I did as an apprentice did more damage than any amount of loud music ever could.

My speakers couldn't get past 18 properly. The tones before that one though, aie. it feels like someone melted my inner ears with a hot needle.

I can't hear anything over 16, but I get kind of weird feeling like a vibration with anything above that.
