This is actually Currys / Dixons / PCWorld's advert for the fact that Windows 7 is out!

Am I the only person who doesn't think the message here is "Windows 7 won't run on your existing PC, better throw it away and get a new one at great expense"?

Way to undermine an actually decent MS product in an attempt to shift your own overpriced hardware!

Classic!

dont worry any one going in there will only be forced to buy one with vista on cause they got an excess of them

[identity profile] xiphias.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no. The message isn't, "Your existing hardware is inadequate and unsatisfying and just not up to the task at hand (and, incidentally, so is your computer)."

No, the REAL message is, "When you install Windows 7 on your machine, it will fuck things up so badly that you will have to throw away the entire machine and start over."

[identity profile] smarriveurr.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
See, that's more the first impression I get. Though I admit there is still a hint of "Throw out your old machine, Vista was shit, 7 is better (but even more bloated)."

[identity profile] pete23.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
time for a mac.

[identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Would be cheaper to buy two new PCs.

[identity profile] pete23.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
yep.

[identity profile] crm.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
would probably work twice as well :P

*dum dum tish*

[identity profile] wrong1.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
There's always one.

[identity profile] pete23.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry. did think twice. failed.

[identity profile] sideband.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Screw that noise. Install Linux. Be happy.

[identity profile] pete23.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
done. gf main box is unubtued. how can I say this...

too much hassle, disappointing. sorry.

[identity profile] darkcryst.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed. Linux is an annoying, frustrating, and mostly incomplete experience.

I love it for it's potential, but I've tried Ubuntu, Red Hat, Suse, Debian, and others... it's just not a replacement OS for anyone who isn't on the fringe of computer users.

and OH GOD the hardware issues...

It's a *GREAT* secondary OS tho.

[identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
great to have on a CD or usb key for emergencies, but I don't use it for daily stuff.

[identity profile] darkcryst.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. I have a knoppix and ubuntu live CD for exactly those situations.

[identity profile] smarriveurr.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. Excellent for imaging, recovery, even troubleshooting. Not what I'd use 24/7.

[identity profile] hippiegunnut.livejournal.com 2009-10-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Weird. One thing that impressed me with Windows 7 is the fact it worked on my hardware without spending half a day downloading drivers (on a different machine and copying over with a usb key cause the networking doesn't work at all on a default install) which linux has done for years for me.

The thing that impressed me most though was the fact I didn't get the Fear & Loathing I normally get when I have to use Windows and in fact actually quite like it (I use Linux as my main OS at work and OS X at home)

[identity profile] sideband.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I said linux.. not pseudo-debian-almost-linux...

Try Fedora. You'll be much happier.

[identity profile] shadowtherat.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's Currys/Dixons/PCWorld, they'd probably sell a computer that has slightly more power than a toaster just to get it off the floor and into some idiot's hands.

[identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
trufax.

[identity profile] megashrike.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently PC World are so desperate they'll knock £100 off any machine when you trade an old one in.

Totally ruins Microsofts 'this will run better on your current hardware than Vista' game plan.

Totally ruins Microsofts 'this will run better on your current hardware than Vista' game plan.

that was largely my thinking.

[identity profile] megashrike.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Although I'll see that poor marketing campaign and raise you This one that I saw last time I was in London.

I understand the advert works in context, but poor tag line is poor.

[identity profile] shadowtherat.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I call that "truth in advertising."

[identity profile] darkcryst.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
ahahahahahahahahaha! Oh my god. It's so true.

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what it sounds like to me, too.

[identity profile] dj-alexander.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
More a case of:

"You don't need a new PC, but we're hinting that you do as we like to sell expensive PCs, and we hope you're too stupid to understand that you don't. It's legally watertight as we can say that the advert is supposed to suggest that Windows 7 turns your existing PC into something new."

[identity profile] robo-toda.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm currently installing a copy on to a 3 year old laptop that's been happily running 7 ultimate since the RC was first released.
Having said that, these adverts are for sheeple, and I echo most of the above.

[identity profile] deathboy.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
yip. it worked fine on my 4 year old box!

[identity profile] sideband.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's reminiscent of the "Windows 95 Song" to my mind.

In other words, it says, "If you install this, you're GOING to need a new PC!"

[identity profile] fengi.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
To me that translates as "...because, oops, the install goddamn destroyed your current one."

[identity profile] danblood.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Lowest Common Denominator: "but surely the process of getting a different kind of windows onto my pc would require wizards?"

[identity profile] robo-toda.livejournal.com 2009-10-24 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Only, apparently, if you're using the rc of ultimate, or, indeed,xp x64. Which is not a supported os for upgrading.

Belongs on failblog!!!
