Y'know, two American friends have mentioned to me about the new "foiled terrorist attack" in London (some lame car-bomb).

Absolutely no British people I've spoken to today have mentioned it in the least.

Seriously. We just couldn't give a fuck.

That's how you fight "terror".

Why do you hate America? Is it because of our freedom?

It's true. I saw it on the news this morning and went "oh" and went to work, just like everybody else in London.

In the US there would probably have been looting by now and end-of-the-world-is-nigh men in sandwich boards.

It's times like this I wish I had a paid account... just for that icon that was going around back in the day...

"You're a bit cold? Tea.
Your boyfriend has just left you? Tea.
You've just been told you've got cancer? Tea.
Coordinated terrorist attack on the transport network bringing the city to a grinding halt? TEA DAMMIT!"

But, yeah. You're spot on about the response. The problem in the US is that the terrorists don't have to do a damn thing to destroy the "American Way of Life" - sensationalist news media and an idiot President are all too willing to do all the terrorizing for them.

Hell, I heard this all over American news... turned on BBC World on the way into work today, and it was like "Oh, by the way, yes, carbomb, 60 litres of petrol, yawn... and now to continued in-depth coverage on yesterday's attack by American forces on alleged allies in Iraq."

Priorities. Fuckdamn.

However, a lot of us in Zone 7 have noticed that the government convened the COBRA emergency response team (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4663369.stm) in light of a failed bomb that closed one underground station in London, whilst not doing so for flooding and freak storms that have killed half a dozen people, left tens of thousands homeless, closed national motorways and railway lines and caused billions of pounds of damage in the UK's fourth largest city (see also video of the main bridge into Ludlow collapsed into floodwater (http://www.shropshirestar.co.uk/2007/06/bridge-collapse-video)). The only response? Worcester Fire Brigade installed some new phone lines (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6252058.stm).

Presumably, if we got invaded, unless they actually got inside the M25, we'd just send in Worcester Rugby Club, right? Or Malvern Women's Institute? Wyre Piddle 1st Cub Scouts?

Gordon Brown cut flood defence spending last year.

UK's fourth largest city

Sheffield doesn't like being a city so much, they like acting like a big village, if you ask most people round here they don't want to be doing with the big city ways of your Leeds, Manchester or Liverpool despite being bigger than two of those.

Gordon Brown cut flood defence spending last year.

And virtually all of it went on the over complicated computerised "warning" system than virtually no-one in the most at risk areas knew about or subscribed to.

Reminds me of a time, not long after 11/9, when there was some American lady on the telly saying that people elsewhere in the world don't know what it's like to live in fear of a terrorist attack, that you could visit some shopping mall or post office and have a bomb explode.

A British guy I knew (Liverpudlian, I think) gaped at the screen for a few moments and then proceeded to laugh himself sick. (The woman was from Boston, I think, which only made it all the more ironic...)

Oh, God, yeah, I remember people going on about that, in the usual egocentric Ami way... and I was like "Uhm... hello, Northern Ireland, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Israel, Sudan, Ethiopia..."

Comparing attacks to population, America had nothing on many nations even after 11/9. Just had to pretend we were the first.

Having said that, I'm still carrying on as normal. I just feel ever so slightly worried. Probably less worried than I would be if something really big happened though, like they stole my chocolate :D
