THANKYOU, paranoid nanny-britain, for taking the joy out of junkfood.

I'll have my celery-trifle now, please.

I was just about to comment about how Cheerios are all shitty now... they used to be ONE flavour (HONEY!) and none of that multi grain shite.

Remember when they used to have the recipe for "Hot Buttered Cheerios" on the side of the box? it was basically Cheerios fried in butter.. oh man.

I didn't get to be the man I am today by eating MULTI GRAIN!!!

Have you seen Tizer now contains no artificial colours? I'm sure it used to have at least 6! That was why it glowed in the dark.

Also the new Tizer doesn't taste anywhere near as good as the old glow-in-the-dark one. I need my E numbers damnit!

I like the less-saturated-fat Walkers but I don't like the sound of multi-grain Hula Hoops. I think some of the initiatives being taken are good but I also think that parents can control what their kids eat better and set a better example with a good mix of fruit and crisps. I think that less sugar and/or fat can sometimes mean that there's something else in there instead... For every bad thing taken away, there can be another there in it's place. This only worries me when I'm dieting.

So... I assume the Hula Hoops are made the same way, as in cooked whatever way, but have multi-grains? Are they still good for you anyway if they're made the same, with all that salt etc?

Just hope they don't take away what I love about Skips. Man, I loooove de
Skips!!! (And chocolate muffins - I have some Greggs choccie muffins right here right now, if anyone dares change those I will scream).

less-saturated-fat Walkers

the baked ones? i like those. they've got enough salt and vinegar flavouring to burn the skin off my tongue, and marginally fewer calories.

Parents? Control their kids? What are you talking about? No, no. The solution is for schools to stop offering kids junk food, and for stores to stop selling junk food aimed at children, and basically to make it so that it's impossible for a youngster to eat something that tastes delicious and is bad for them.

Because then, when they grow up, they'll have "good eating habits" developed. They won't find a burger/box of sugar, eat it, and go "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER AND IT IS ALL I WILL EAT FROM HERE ON OUT!" because they never actually learned a damned thing about nutrition... really.

A lot of schools are taking the initiative and taking chips etc off the menu, the school I worked at had crisps etc but did salads and many healthy properly cooked foods for lunch, we were much surprised when the boys of all people (this is secondary) chose to grab a saad as they could take it outside to munch inbetween footie games. It worked well and we got a lot of kudos for that. But when I say parents should try harder, I mean the ones who don't attempt to make healthy food for their kids and shut them up with sweets and crisps - in our house we had a good mix of bad and good and my Mum taught us to try and balance. Stores won't stop selling stuff, but some schools are trying harder and some are getting somewhere.

I tend to disagree with the concept. I understand that the immediate impact may be to reduce a child's consumption of unhealthy foods somewhat, but limiting their options doesn't seem to me to teach them anything about making choices. As far as I've always seen, making something forbidden makes it even more tempting. Leaving the option there while actually trying to impress on the child that it's a "sometimes" food, etc... that to me has better legs. Otherwise, well, eventually, they'll get out of school, and be able to buy whatever atrocious food they really wanted and couldn't get.

I feel that all too often, schools are being made to bear the burdens of bad and absent parenting - this is one of those cases, to me. It also ties into another idea I reject, which is shielding children from life... trying to arrange a system whereby nothing negative comes before the child until they magically gain the wisdom to react on an arbitrary birthday. It's not age that grants wisdom, but experience. A child who isn't exposed to choices, and prepared to make them, will be totally at sea on the day society deems that child an adult and opens up all options... while waiting to punish poor choices.

I definitely agree with a lot of the second bit - it makes sense and I learnt some first hand, about eating and such - though some of my reasons for overeating after I left school were related to something else. But once I ruined a great figure and stopped being able to enjoy sports I liked because I was slow and tired, I realised how badly I had to change myself. But I just wish that not every child has to experience it that way. Luckily I lost over 5 stone of it last year and even at 8 months pregnant now I apparently look quite good - we had a tuck shop at school and I spent my lunch money there, that didn't help! But I seemed to burn it off when I was at school, I did so much sports. When I left... It didn't burn off. And I hadn't remembered someone telling me that if I lived on pasta while not doing sports and excercise that I'd not help myself either. D'oh.

To me, it's really a case of the whole "give a man a fish/teach a man to fish" proverb. Constraining the kid's diet will help him stay healthy as a kid - assuming he doesn't have a chance to hit a vending machine or convenience store the rest of the day, and assuming mom & dad don't keep tons of sugary fattening snacks around the house without laying down groundrules... but eventually, he has to make the decisions.

Learning from experience is one of the most effective teachers, though. The lesson might hurt, and take a while, but it's one you don't forget... and I don't like the organizations and governments taking on a roll as nanny... even when it comes to kids. I feel like, parents have a right and a responsibility to raise their own, taking away either one reduces both.

Of course, in the interest of full disclosure, I had horrible habits growing up. Now, I'm 6'4" and weigh over 21 stone. But, uhm... you'd never guess to look at me? And I don't really blame my school, or my parents. I knew, and I still know, the foods I was/am eating are bad. I just choose to eat them anyway. And as much as modern culture seems to want to sit over your shoulder to tell you not to smoke, not to eat at McDonald's, not to get regular Hula Hoops... All that focus makes me even more stubborn about it on every count.

Can I get them in a mixer bag with chocolate covered pretzels?

That way, when I vomit up the contents, I can just reseal the bag and sell it on to the next schmuck.

PS. I have your Fear/Mad World remix blasting constantly in my car at the moment - awesome work :)
